The Museum’s Origami Holiday Tree is back to ring in the season! This year, groups of animals adorn the tree.

In the wild, many animals—even solitary ones, such as owls—spend at least some of their time with others of their species, whether for mating, protection, or feeding. So it’s no wonder that, over time, farmers, scientists, perhaps even poets, developed terms—sometimes whimsical—for animals in groups.

A group of owls is sometimes called a “parliament.” A group of zebras is sometimes fancifully called a “zeal.” Come see the many other groupings, like a “tower” of giraffes, a “smack” of jellyfish, and more.

Healthy Alternative Meal

I’m a born and raised California girl; therefore, my comfort food is Mexican all the way! And while I am a fan of everything burrito, enchilada, taco, fajita, and quesadilla- most of it can leave you in a catatonic state. Some Mexican meals end up being more like two! So here is a way I get my Mexican food fix with a few simple substitutions (you wont find cheese or rice) but you will find a plethora of filling veggies!

Mexican Salad

(Substitute, add, or delete as you feel necessary!)

Ingredients:

Baby Leaf lettuce

Black Beans

Avocado

Chicken (Substitute ideas: tofu or shrimp)

Whole Sweet Corn Kernels

Mushrooms

Green Bell Pepper

Your choice of salsa

Directions:

Use the salsa as a dressing, throw ingredients into a bowl and enjoy! It’s really that easy :)

We could indeed follow Germany’s lead. And we could even do it without the burden of increased costs—if only we could eliminate fossil fuel subsidies and direct them towards renewables. To further illustrate my point, I will now subject you to an infographic. But don’t worry, it’s simple, and short (the full thing is here):

Despite the roar of marching protesters, Paloma Mallmann remains unmoved, eyes closed, deep in meditation. She is part of a MedMob, or meditation flash mob, during an Occupy Los Angeles march last November 11.

As part of a meditation mob, Mallmann and others showed a different way of being “fierce” for the Occupy movement. Whether downtown or on the Westside with Occupy Venice, she practices what she describes as an “internal revolution” in tune with the Occupy Universe.

“If you can teach meditation or calm, it is as important as organizing a protest, “ Mallmann said. “Then it becomes part of every day.”

Read the rest of the article about how not all protests are done by marching, sometimes the most effective acts is to not be moved.

I went for Weekend Sherpa to brave the open seas and take photos at Dana Point near Newport Beach, CA.

Thanks to the nutrient-rich waters and embarking at the height of the mating season, we caught four (though I am willing to bet it was the same two twice!), and a thousand common dolphins leaping in all directions. You heard right, a thousand. Pair that with more Flipper-esq dolphins that you can shake a stick at and I would call that a success.

The Loneliest Whale in the World.

In 2004, The New York Times wrote an article about the loneliest whale in the world. Scientists have been tracking her since 1992 and they discovered the problem:

She isn’t like any other baleen whale. Unlike all other whales, she doesn’t have friends. She doesn’t have a family. She doesn’t belong to any tribe, pack or gang. She doesn’t have a lover. She never had one. Her songs come in groups of two to six calls, lasting for five to six seconds each. But her voice is unlike any other baleen whale. It is unique—while the rest of her kind communicate between 12 and 25hz, she sings at 52hz. You see, that’s precisely the problem. No other whales can hear her. Every one of her desperate calls to communicate remains unanswered. Each cry ignored. And, with every lonely song, she becomes sadder and more frustrated, her notes going deeper in despair as the years go by.

I need to go talk to some frozen yogurt about this.

This just breaks my heart that this whale must wander the world alone. Frustrating that no matter how hard she tries she left without any answers or friends to call home. I know that feeling.

Not sure how to feel about the frozen yogurt.

wickedclothes:

Indeed.

Photo

I’m doing cleanse in order to rid my body of all the scary...

I’m doing cleanse in order to rid my body of all the scary 8 lbs of gunk the average person has lodged in their intestines. That’s a literal food baby chilling in your colon. That’s also a lot of burritos or just the one pictured. Gross…

After losing my mind while starving on the “Master Cleanse,” I want a gentle approach of vegan diet with focus on raw. Although I won’t be living on grapefruits alone! I’m going for it with a switch to gluten-free. My guy and cleanse partner just laughed and wished me luck. Say good-bye to all my favorites: coffee, cheese, wine, beer and bread.

We have now taken to Vitamineral Green superfood smoothies, thanks to a very tattooed natural foods pharmacist who said it’s “the best on the market.” She was very excited, and Donna Summer was playing on the radio in a marathon tribute. I caught got up in the moment.

Also, I learned that phsyllium husk is one of the biggest hoaxes ever, and you carry it around around like luggage in your intestines or perhaps like heroin someone may smuggle through airport security. It’s not pretty. Despite a bevy of psyllium products that claim to clear you out like burglars on Christmas, just say no.

I landed on my regular regime of milk thistle to support my liver, since no one else will. Also, Fiber Smart to get me moving with the important ayurvedic ingredient triphala, a gentle cleansing formula containing three of the most important herbs for detoxification and rejuvenation, or so I’m told by Yoga International. I like that Fiber Smart is organic, vegetarian and has probiotics to get my flora healthy.

Since I am far from the first person to become obsessed with this topic, I would love to hear your thoughts or suggestions on what people are taking or has worked.

Here’s to a Spring cleanse and getting out the evil!

Travel just got more organized. Yup, those are “to do” stickies and there is indeed a “just-in-case” ruler, as well. Crazy that Havana has the same time zone as New York City. I heart planners!
